I missed C1’s match last weekend while in Hong Kong (Wow wee), so I was looking forward to watching the team play this weekend…but wait…who is that standing on the sidelines? Oh right, it’s THAT dad…THAT famous footballer…cheering on one of his own kiddos.
How does that work for kids of talented, phenomenally successful athletes? Are they born with extraordinary talent themselves, or is it encouraged, promoted, even sort of just a little bit forced? Do nature vs. nurture rules apply? I’m afraid I’ll never know as neither myself nor CSr (Daaad) are particularly gifted in any particular sport. Sorry Daaad but we know it’s true.
So, moving on from any further philosophical inquiries, WHO REALLY CARES when we get to see THAT dad out on the pitch…if his kids want to play football as well then football AWAY!
Except ALL the other kids DO care and word is now getting around that he is here. There are streams of footballers out today…young and old that are now running off their own pitches to get a boot, shirt, back, anything they can grab, signed and some even ask for a picture with him.
I am not one to give a hoot about celebs… but… I am now a fan. To see him offer brief moments to the kids and grown ups alike, was inspiring. He was a gentleman…gracious, polite, seemingly relaxed and more than willing to spare some time for the kids. I now understand what all of those ambassador roles and mentoring programs are for…he is making a difference and I applaud him.
I suppose by the end of the season I will have to embarass myself and ask for either an autograph or a picture with C1 and THAT dad…for C1… of course… but for now I won’t bother…after all, THAT dad is just a dad today watching his kid play football.
