Since I’m not moving around very much these days, (A Bit Kaput), I should be writing, posting, tweeting, and generally blabbing away a bit more but instead…I’ve been reading…
Last week was Book Week at C1 and C2’s school, culminating in World Book Day last Friday. Every day there was something going on at school and the kids seemed to delight in sharing their favorite stories and characters. On Friday they were to ‘dress up as a favorite character or bring in a ‘prop’ from a favorite story.
C1 takes this very seriously. The first year during C1’s Year 1, (age 5), C1 decided that Arctic Tale was C1’s favorite ‘book’, although it was really just a picture book to National Geographic’s documentary.
But…C1 ‘read’ it at the age of 5 so here is how a polar bear cub looks going to school in London…
The second year, during C1’s Year 2, the Mr. Men series were C1’s ALL TIME BESTEST books in the world.
So, Mr. Strong made a special appearance at our local school.
You can probably see C2’s superhero leggings and muscles creeping into that photo but that is another story…
Last year, during C1’s Year 3, C1 decided to devote the time and energy into a book cover (WHEW!), of the then latest favorite book, some scourge of the sea called Solak in the Beast Quest series.
Imagine trying to recreate THAT in a costume! Cotton balls on cut out masks and cartoon faces on storage boxes are about the extent of my costume creations, so you can imagine my relief with C1’s enthusiasm for an art project instead!
Although C1’s ‘alternative version’ isn’t just different from the original, …it’s a bit weird. I probably could have just wrapped a blue stocking around C1’s body and attached a scrub brush to C1’s mouth…seriously…WHAT IS THAT? (Sorry C1 if you ever read this but by the time you are ‘blogging’ I am sure I will have embarrassed you much more in many other ways and this will be forgiven.)
Seeing the children’s artwork displayed at the local bookshop is a real treat for the kids as well as the parents…although C1 wanted to know if someone was going to ‘buy’ the bookcover. A little Buddy Apprentice even back then! (Make Hay).
This year, due to my eating and drinking my injured self through Italy, I completely forgot about the book cover and when we got back last week, thankfully, both C1 and C2 decided on ‘props’ this year. (Whew!)
C1 is thoroughly engrossed in the Sam Silver Pirate series so first wanted to bring in a parrot…a real one. Hmmm…
Then C1 decided Doctor Proctor’s Fart Powder was the latest favorite and I was not entirely sure how to handle a ‘prop’ for that one…
C1 finally settled on ‘making a dragon’…OH IS THAT ALL? Geesh.
A little cutting, a lot of taping and VOILA, C1 had a dragon.
Since we are reading a lot more together every night now while my knee heals, C1 is happy with pirate adventures, dragon slaying and fart powder. C2 however, has decided I should be reading King Arthur, an ambitious birthday gift set from Fashionista friend (A Fitting Place).
I am enjoying our evening reading sessions and C2 is enthusiastic about the story…yet, I can’t help but wonder if I will somehow be making some sort of medieval costume next year. A knight? A king? Then again, maybe next year will include symbols as well as props. I better make sure nothing happens to C1’s dragon.
