Trying something new this summer, we have agreed to meet SIS and Brother-In-Law (BIL) on Seven Mile Beach. It’s a good thing I double checked how far it is from Bethpage Park (Duck Fans) because I almost booked a ticket to Grand Cayman!!!…
Okay. Not really. Even though we used to visit my most favorite Uncle D in the world, on Seven Mile Beach in Grand Cayman… this week, we are on Seven Mile Beach, Avalon…in New Jersey. SIS and BIL are hosting 9 of us, even though it should be 10 of us…and there are 2 more staying at a beach hotel down the street…
Sharing a house with extended family can sometimes be a bit tricky and when there are lots of kids involved, meal times could potentially be a problem. But, C1, C2 and their cousins are old enough that we don’t REALLY have to worry about feeding schedules or sleep schedules anymore…RIGHT?!?
BUT maybe we DO have to worry about pleasing all of the adults as it is our vacation (holiday) afterall...and THAT can be more complicated than Rachel Ray meeting Jamie Oliver in a transatlantic cook off. Imagine if either of their producers failed to brief them respectively on the required ingredients, cooking times or dietary restrictions of their culinary customers…or IF they had to cook in a blind taste taste to each other’s family members. Hmmm…I wonder…but I digress.
But seriously, how would Rachel or Jamie recommend cooking for 11 when one of us…BIL, as an example, does not and WILL not eat fish, seafood or ANYTHING that comes from the sea. I am ACTUALLY QUITE certain that the only SEA BIL really cares about is the SEAsoning for his sauce…or gravy that is, for his meatballs.
PROBLEM SOLVED !!! We don’t need any celebrity chefs (YET) as BIL can cook.
BIL made meatballs last night – not usual seaside fare but they are truly outstanding and I have never been able to replicate them. The reason – not enough breadcrumbs…or eggs… or parmesan… or meat probably for that matter…apparently.
The picture does NOT do BIL’s MBs justice but I can assure you that Rachel and/or Jamie could learn a thing or two from my BIL…unless of course they wanted fish, or seafood.
At the moment while trying to tell you all a bit about last night’s dinner and first impressions of Avalon’s beach, boardwalk, quaint shops and cozy restaurants, SIS is scurrying around me packing up snacks, filling up water bottles and getting her own kids AND mine dressed and ready to go to Cape May.
Cape May is the southern most tip of New Jersey and is where the Delaware Bay meets the Atlantic. We are going to climb the 199 step historic lighthouse but more on that later…we are off. No relaxin’ around THIS Seven Mile Beach this morning as SIS has not settled into island time…YET…MON…
Strapping the kids into their car seats, CuzJ asks a question:
CuzJ: Why are COWS so cool?
Me: I don’t know…why ARE cows so cool?
CuzJ: ‘Cause they got MOOS like Jagger
Meatballs and Mick…not a bad start to the Jersey Shore (Jersey Cape?) week…now if I can just convince BIL to make a Crabcake…
Avignon, Sauvignon Blanc
Then open something else –
It’s from California anyway and We’re Stronger than the Storm…so support local vineyards!
