Twenty years ago, I sat in the heart of South America, in the middle of the Pantanal, the world’s largest wetland area, in the Brazilian state Mato Grosso. And what was I doing? I was watching the 1994 World Cup…WHAT ELSE? Read more

I had a dream about THAT dad last night. I don’t know why…seriously. I haven’t seen him on the pitch in weeks…in fact, since C1’s football team won their division cup final, we have taken a break from football this term (it’s SUMMER term now over here… see TERMinal leave if you’re confused), and moved to the baseball fields. I missed C1’s match last weekend while in Hong Kong (Wow wee), so I was looking forward to watching the team play this weekend…but wait…who is that standing on the sidelines? Oh right, it’s THAT dad…THAT famous footballer…cheering on one of his own kiddos. Read more
Okay so I’m really not that crazy worrying about the sun disappearing as soon as summer holidays are over. (Make Hay). Whatever that was looming and lurking last week while we all gallivanted around the streets showing off our tans, has now reared and surged and summer is gone…long gone…already…and I am cold. But I tell you, it’s not just me…
Daaad, who is supposed to be as hardy as a Highland ox put the heat on yesterday…YUP…
but don’t tell him I told you…
I think it might have something to do with the fact that we were up and out the door on a Sunday morning by 9am to go watch C1’s first football match of the season. It was sunny at 9am…and since the day before had been a complete washout, I thought some SUNNY fresh air would do me some good, which is why I decided to go as well…but don’t tell C1 that.
The team we were playing was at a sports field near Heathrow. C1’s away games leave me geographically challenged at the best of times, so at 9:30 on a Sunday, I just grabbed some coffee and let Daaad work out where we were going…even though C1 and C2 agreed that I knew my way around NY and NJ better than Daaad did…but don’t tell him I told you that either!
So, cruising along the M4 we exit and drive through Heathrow Tunnel Road, but instead of going to the terminals, we turn left. Errr… not exactly the left turn I’d like to make when describing airport scenarios but anyway, I have no idea where we are now and I’m pretty sure Daaad doesn’t either. A ha! iPhone sat nav, I salute you.
Just as we pull up to the playing fields which are tucked away somewhere between Jetfuel Lane and Engineroar Drive, my old friend Nimbus shows up.
REALLY??? Now?!? Don’t you have somewhere else to be this morning? We’re good – really…thanks for stopping by but keep on moving…PLEASE. PLEASE!!!
Ol’ Nimbus isn’t going anywhere. In fact, I think he is enjoying the game so much that he put a call into his good friends Blustery and Gust and they have all come down the M4 to see how the game is going…and they have the best seat in the house…right above the pitch just a few inches from the action.
At least C1’s team is winning so I am screaming and cheering for every single player on the team like the overly competitive alpha-American soccer mom that I’m not…’cause I’m jumping up and down screaming to stay warm…not because I give a hoot about the game…really…but don’t tell C1 THAT either.
Nimbus has been taunting and teasing us the entire first half…but I think he and his friends are enjoying the match so much that they want all of their mates to come along so here comes a long layer of his puffed up friends. How’ve ya been Stratus? Not that I REALLY care…REALLY.
Well, whatever THEY decide to do, I have had enough of this nimbo limbo state and since C1’s team is winning, I am now a fair weather fan and decide to go sit in the car and read some of the paper. Good timing as here comes the rain…and A LOT of it.
Okay Nimbus, I get it. Message received…more thunderous and not clear at all but I hear you. Summer is over.
2 oz sloe gin
1 oz fresh squeezed lime juice
2 oz ginger ale
Mix and garnish with lime but if you are freezing your a** off, put the heat on and just go straight for the whiskey…but don’t tell anyone!
